In 1993 politicians on both sides of the Sound decided to establish the Öresund Committee as a forum for voluntary political cooperation. The Committee is a political constellation that promotes regional cross-border cooperation at all levels and ensures that due regard is paid to the interests of the Öresund Region by the two nations’ parliaments, the Swedish Riksdag and the Danish Folketing. The Öresund Committee is an "Embassy" of the Öresund region.

The members themselves elect their representatives and their deputies on the Öresund Committee. There are 18 Swedish representatives and 18 Danish representatives, who serve for the duration of their political mandate in their respective country. The Öresund Committee convenes twice a year.

Presidency of the Öresund Committee
The President and Vice President hold their positions both in the Öresund Committee and in the Executive Committee. The President and Vice President sit for a one-year period, with the positions alternating between Swedish and Danish representatives.

The Executive Committee
Consists of 12 committee members; six from Sweden and six from Denmark. The Executive Committee meets on at least four occasions each year.

The Öresund Committee
Consists of 36 popularly elected politicians; 18 from Sweden and 18 from Denmark. The Öresund Committee meets on at least two occasions a year.

The Secretariat of the Öresund Committee
